Does anyone know the history of rainford house. Winstanley.?my winstanley and richardson families lived there in the 1800s.and know of the families after. But would like to know of its history?eg how did it get its name.or where can i find out Chris

It used to be Rainford Hall,it was built in 1665 and comprised two dwellings which were converted into one.It was demolished in 1967

Christine I wonder if your Winstanley line is mine? I'm trying to find a James Winstanley b1825 in Winstanley and it could be him at Rainford House in 1841.

My gg grandfather 1800ish and wife Ann wadsworth lived rainford house .they had son James 1835. There was also living in other cottage Sarah winstanley .1787ish. With sons john 1829and James 1828 i
don't know if she a widow or single.
Found births for these two with father James and mother Sarah.but don't know where he came from.
On James 1828marriage father was James deceased. Look on people on my post last week there is the 1841census for James and Ann and family.

On the 1841 census the 2 dwellings at rainford house were all Winstanleys. Sarah was in one with 2 lads and a family in the other. I wondered if Sarah was their grandmother . what was your gtgt grandfather's name Christine?

James winstanley. About 1800 .married 1823 Ann wadsworth .they had several children one was my g grandmother Mary 1825.
James parents were William and Mary fairhurst.they lived at wigan lodge.winstanley. There were two cottages that was rainford house .

I think James might be mt gt gt granddad as he was born Winstanley and in 1841 he was the only James of that age to be in Winstanley.
James and Jon could be the youngest and others could have moved on or died. I think it was common for widowers to remarry and get a new mum for the family.

Gave you wrong info. James. About 1800s.parents were Samuel 1762 and Margaret (Nee hill)married 1783

Found a marriage for James and esther houghton in 1816 they had three children. Last one Alice 1821 she died then .in childbirth. He could have married again Sarah can't find it though. Looks like James 1826 married Mary park.have got it all written down. Will find it. Just need toknow who James.1787 father was.

I don't think so. I've traced back via Thomas Winstanley at lamberhead Green.He was born 1847 and baptised at St Johns in 1853 along with siblings. I'm pretty certain about him now as he's the only Thomas that age born in Pemberton. James is his father born in Winstanley.
I get very confused as many of the family have the same Christian names!

Christine May Mill was previously called Wildes Mill and there was a row of cottages down Foundry Lane called Wildes Cottages where the workers lived including my Great, Great, Great Grandfather and Grandmother who came here at the time of the Potato Famine in Ireland when they were starving. Then it was the American War of Independence when no cotton was coming over here so they were starving again. I don't know how they survived.

My grandmothers sister Phoebe gee(nee Richardson) lived there in the 1800s.
I can just about remember them. Used to cycle past rainford house and Holmes house farm,down watkins brow which led to the cottages and may mill .happy days.now all houses. .only tanpit. Cottages remain. Don't know why they weren't pulled down as well. My father was born thereand my grandparents and g .grandparents as well.

Marie was it you who posted a picture of Wildes cottages once? I googled Winstanley and found a few old pictures of the cottages. I think they might be on here somewhere.

Kathpressey.... The book about the Bankes family . Do you know who the author is? I would be very interested to learn who it is.

The first one is new houses.pembeRton road.i lived across the road from them.they were demolished in the late 50 early 60s.
There is another rowfurther down road still there and now up graded Jon look lovely. My grandmother was born there before moving to tan pits .think the other houses may have been somewhere near the hall.don't recognise them.does it not say where they are. ?

Yes just looked on site these cottages are up hall lane which starts at pony dick leading to the hall. One of them has been renovated and sold for 4000k couple of. years ago

I'll look for the link you mention Christine - ta. It's The Early Records of The Bankes Family at Winstanley by Joyce Bankes and Eric Kerridge.I got a copy 2nd hand from Amazon for about £11 as the new one was expensive.I think it includes a map.

Remember Joyce banks. They had a rough time when the pits all closed .they had to live in the servants quarters. Couldn't afford to renovate it. All falling down now.absolute shameful. I grew up in winstanley and remember going to daffodil day they had every year.
Think most people worked for the bankes fam ily in the 1800s they practically owned everything.
There are some photo s of meyrick bankes on the album site for winstanley. The link i mentioned is worth a read though.

Theysold all the farms and cottages off.the ones at new houses sold for £50

I have in my possession a typewritten account by Joyce H M Bankes of the history of the hall and the Bankes family. In it is mention of a William Winstanley steward to Mrs. Martha Holme. A letter written by him is dated September 15th 1711. Would this be a relative of either of you.

There will be some connection somewhere anne.so far im ?James 1700 butthere were so many winstanley s . All James,William or Samuel.

This tome that I have is I believe typed by JHMB herself and the Mrs. Martha Holme was a Bankes. The letter was written in Pemberton. Maybe if you were able to find what occupation your ancestors had.....

Think they were farmers or labourers on a farm.there were so many farms around. The other occupation was nailor ,which was a major job then ,as so many horses that needed shoeing .
Is there any clue in the letter? Must be difficult to read .

My book has arrived. 100pages. It has the memoranda book of James Bankes in it which will take some reading as it's old English! written Elizabethan times. it has asection on the state accounts1667-78; the Rentals 1668-77 and the Probate inventory of James Bankes. It's not bedtime reading but there are lots of references to Winstanleys which should be interesting.There's a map at the back of the land owned by William Bankes 1770 with houses marked. great stuff. I can try and scan it.

Kath.... It isn't an original letter. I am wondering if this spiral bound thing I have (which has been lent to me along with plans of the hall) could be the original proof of the book you have. It is also full of accounts, solicitors letters, memories, tales and much more. Heavy going reading. I was originally looking for anything relating to Rainford house but nothing yet. It would seem JHMB has written several books including the one with E.Kerridge (spelling).

I have extract from Donald Anderson book. Wonder if rainford house was the home of the winstanleys originally.it was built 1665 so James would have been long gone by then .presume it was built by the rainford family. My winstanleys lived there in the 1800s.then my grandmothers uncle Nathan Richardson lived there in the 1880.
I knew it as shaws cottage down shaws lane . The shaws lived there in the 1950s.
I have a book called antiquarian society transaction.s.there is an extract by Joyce bankes on the records of mining in winstanley.will have a read through.

Yes that's what the letter was about, Martha running the mines.

In my book there are quite a few Rainfords in the index. I imagine this family lived in the house that became known as Rainford house.

Apparently Ann holme changed her name back to bankes to keep the name going.

Christine, you must have been posh you living in Winstanley. We all lived in Wallgate and then on Council estates.

I think the posh Winstanley of todays bears no resemblance to the Old Winstanley. I'm sure it was better then and a real community. Wallgate is well known for it's old community spirit Marie. You only have to read the Wallgate posts on here to realise that.Always be proud of your heritage.[as I'm sure we all are!]

My maternal Grandmother was a 'Winstanley' I have traced back my line using certificates and censuses, etc and concluded the 1841 census Sarah Winstanley with James and John ARE her sons. The son, James, is my 3 x Great Grandfather (married Mary Peank (Penk) in 1850.
Sarah, was nee 'Hitchen', and she married James Winstanley (1787 - 1833) in December 1807 at All Saints Church, Wigan (Lancs OPC).
My curiosity is: was my 4 x Gt Grandfather, James (b. 1787) a relative of the James Winstanley married to Ann and also at Rainford House on the 1841 census? Perhaps a cousin?

No, you won't know me. I have never managed to visit the Wigan area. It's on my bucket list, will get there one day.
I also never met any of Grandma's family, just heard about them. I grew up in the other Rose county at Whitby, Yorkshire, but born in Kent!
My Grandma was Rhoda Winstanley, her father being James Winstanley (1894 - 1945) and mother, Mona (nee Hall).
James's parents were William Winstanley (b. 1862) and Elizabeth Darbyshire, both of Lamberhead Green.
James's parents: James Winstanley (b. 1826 Winstanley, christened in St Aiden, Billinge 1826), and Mary Peank (Penk).

Which led me back to James Winstanley (1787 - 1833, nailor) and Sarah Hitchen (1786 - 1857). They married in 1807 at All Saints, Wigan.
